VIRGINIA BASS FISHING TEAMS VISIT CHICKAHOMINY RIVER
A pair of Covington anglers copped top honors at the Virginia Bass Fishing Teams annual tournament on the Chickahominy River on June 27th. Lonnie Givens and Scott Slayton weighed in a limit of eight fish with a total weight of 18.05 pounds. The team reported using plastic frogs, worms and lizards while fishing up river lily pads. They had their limit by noon and culled an additional six fish. Their winning limit also consisted of the lunker of the day that weighed in at 5.22 pounds. They received $800.00 for first place and another $270.00 for the 1st big fish award.
Wesley Dew and Kenny Sexton of Eagle Rock, Va. finished in second place with an eight fish limit weighing 16.64 pounds. This team had their limit at 7:30 AM, fishing up river with frogs and Senko’s. Second place paid $480.00. They also received $270.00 for the 2nd big fish award with a 5.13 pound largemouth bass.
The Waynesboro team of Jay Williams and Kirk Thomasson had their limit by 10:30 AM and culled three more bass while fishing up river using soft plastic baits. The total weight of their limit was 16.57 pounds and the payoff for third place was $320.00.
Gabe Scott and A.J. Best of Palmyra, Va. weighed in a limit that tipped the scales at 16.51 pounds. They received $100.00 for their efforts.
The air temperature at the “Chick” was 95 degrees and the dingy water topped out at a “cool” 86 degrees. The weather conditions were sunny and exceptionally hot.
The next stop for the VBFT anglers will be a two day affair at Buggs Island Lake on September 18th and 19th. These will be two separate events with Saturday’s tournament being a make up for the previously scheduled and cancelled Lake Gaston tournament.
